Health experts have warned that over 60 per cent of schoolchildren in India are suffering from back bone and muscle problems, slouched postures and neck pain owing to the heavy backpacks they carry to school everyday.

Researchers have also warned that there is an urgent need to tackle the issue as children under the age of 18 do not have too strong a spine to carry the weight and also because medically children’s bones are soft up to the age of 18.

Further, the heavy backpacks also strain the shoulders which could eventually lead to muscle problems in shoulders. The heavy backpacks also stress the middle back, ribs, and lower back and also cause muscle imbalance that could eventually lead to muscle strain, muscle spasm, and back pain.

Beyond the problems mentioned above, there are children who complain about headaches, shoulder pains, lower back pain and neck and arm pain because of their habit of carrying the backpacks on their shoulders.

Experts have suggested for a compulsory physical education period that will enable children to be fit and flexible.

Doctors are also calling parents to provide their kids with nutrition like proteins, vitamin D, calcium, etc.

As far as the types of backpacks are concerned, experts have suggested using padded back packs. Those with wheels are also recommended as children can just pull them with little effort.

Experts ask children to refrain from carrying the backpack low, near the hips, as that puts stress on the spine.
